In June I had a residency at Surge in Glasgow to explore the beginnings of this idea. I spent the time moving, dancing, thinking, looking, repeating.
I was finding and exploring lots of different material and ideas to see what stuck together, what was interesting and what stories, characters, moods and ideas appeared. The aim of this residency wasn't to find the right things, or create the beginning of a show but just to explore my ideas.
Many thanks to everyone who came along, saw things, listened to my thoughts and gave plenty of thoughtful useful feedback and help along the way. And of course thanks to Alan and Surge for the space and time.
Below are some videos of bits and pieces and some brief thoughts.

I worked with an oversized rubber nose to get away from my own face, my own personality. The nose has a clear direction and I followed this to create different ways to move in the space.
Part of this work was purely technical: making shapes, constructing movements, using different levels, having the feet go one way and the body another whilst the arms did something different and the face and eyes yet another.

I was interested in time, hunger and walking.
Bruegel created the paintings that inspired me 400 years ago and yet the people seemed very real and alive. I liked the idea of the medieval peasant who, landless and dispossessed walked and walked almost forever with hunger and fatigue, and the idea of walking back in time, into one of Bruegel's paintings and meeting/becoming one of these strange figures.
